Jakarta's Economy Improves

VIVAnews - Jakarta has experienced a significant growth in the economy. The indication is the rise of export and import activities in the city. In December 2009, exports conducted through Jakarta went up 5.88 percent, worth US$ 2,971 million while in November 2009, the activities only earned US$ 2.806 million.

Compared to the same period in 2008, the value of exports in December 2009 was 9.9 percent higher. Import activities also rose 18.05 percent, earning US$ 5,242 million in comparison to the import value in November 2009 which was US$ 4.44 million.

The Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Agus Suherman said the escalation occurred because Jakarta was still the gate to both activities. This will surely help the city boost the economic growth and anticipate the impacts of global crisis.

He also said Jakarta’s exported products contributed 21.31 percent to the total value of exports in November 2009, increasing 0.04 points from the same time last year which was 21.27 percent.

Out of 10 types of Jakarta’s main non-oil export commodity, five contributed to the rise in exports value. The commodities are jewelries/ diamonds that are worth US$ 23.65 million, knitted goods (US$ 6.86 million), non-knitted clothes (US$ 4.24 million), machines/ electronics (US$ 1.78 million) and soaps and sanitary kits (US$ 0.4 million).

However, the exports value of Jakarta’s products was not going through the same progress. In November 2009, the value was only US$ 598. 12 million, declining 9.74 percent from October 2009, which was US$ 662.65 million. The amount was also 15.59 percent lower than the previous year.

“But, cumulatively, exports value through Jakarta along 2009 has decreased 9.84 percent, only reaching US$ 32.539 million than 2008,” Suherman said.

He pointed out that export activities, which greatly and directly affect the city’s economy, are the ones that involve products manufactured by units located in Jakarta and are exported through harbors in Jakarta and other cities such as Lampung, Central Java and East Java.

The main markets of Jakarta’s exported products are the ASEAN countries. Along November 2009, the total amount of products marketed to the countries reached 35.02 percent, going up 1.89 points from the same month in 2008 which was only 33.13 percent. The number was also 4.38 points higher than October 2009 that reached 30.64 percent.

Meanwhile, imports value in December 2009 increased 18.05 percent, reaching US$ 5.242 million in comparison to the value in November 2009. Even compared to the same month in 2008, the value was also 25.48 percent higher.
