VIVAnews - The Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) confirms that foreign investors are still not allowed to hold the ownership of telecommunication towers.
BKPM Head Gita Wirjawan said the ownership would still refer to the joint ministerial decree (SKB) between three ministers and the Head of BKPM, which was issued in 2009.
"We respect over [the decree],” she said at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday, March 18.
Wirjawan also said telecommunication towers were not included in the negative investment list (DNI).”It will be restricted (for foreign investors),” she said.
According to her, the assessment conducted by BKPM is based on business approach. “As long as the sector needs funds, we’ll be open minded”.
She continued by saying that if local entrepreneurs are in need of funds to develop the towers, foreign investors will be allowed to step in. “I think financing is permitted”.
Wirjawan earlier said that the construction of telecommunication towers or base transceiver station (BTS) required about IDR70-80 trillion per year.
BKPM’s analysis shows that Indonesia will need 150-200 thousand of BTS for the next seven years. Meanwhile, every BTS requires IDR1 million for the development.
Wirjawan also pointed out her suggestion, saying that foreign investments should be limited up to 49 percent based on the agreement between creative industry and the sectors of education and health.
“Creative industry doesn’t mind about the certain limitation,” she said.
However, foreign investors are allowed to invest up to 67 percent in health industry. “It’s based on the consideration that Indonesia’s healthcare facilities are still inadequate. Even flu patients need to go to Singapore”.
She also informed the media that the agreement on the DNI will be made later this month. “One more meeting tomorrow and it will be done”.
