Not Yet Responding FTA, Exports to China Fall

VIVAnews - Business opportunities created by the ACFTA (ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement) are not yet fully made use of by Indonesian entrepreneurs.

The conclusion was drawn based on the data from the Central Statistics Bureau (BPS) suggesting a decrease in exports and imports.

BPS Head Rusman Heriawan said in February, the value of Indonesian exports to China went down. Exports to China only reached US$986.2 million compared to January, which was US$1.01 billion.

A similar derivation was also found in import activities, which went from US$1.43 billion to US$1.38 billion during the second month of the year.

“That means, domestic trade is still adopting the current system or, in other words, hasn’t been motivated by the ACFTA. The statistics show that the FTA hasn’t been responded by the entrepreneurs, “ Heriawan said during a press conference at his office in Jakarta on April 1.

He also assumes the FTA is supposed to increase the value of imports and exports to China.

“But, in reality, we’re still suffering from US$380 million of deficit until February”, he said.

However, he continued, the degradation wasn’t only discovered in the value of exports to China. Generally, Indonesian export value has also dropped 3.37 percent compared to January.

The drop in January was not considered a spectacular finding because such case has been happening since the last four years. “In comparison to January, export values in February have been normally decreasing since the past four years”.
