VIVAnews - Imported clothes from China have started to fill up shelves and counters at department stores in Indonesia after more than three months of ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
As a result, the sales of local clothing have decreased about 20 percent.
“Chinese clothing, especially ladies' wear, has begun to grow in number. It is now available in department stores while it could only be found in Glodok or Tanah Abang, “ The Head of Association of Garment and Accessories Suppliers (APGAI), Poppy Dharsono said at the office of Industry Ministry in Jakarta on Thursday, April 8.
She also said the invasion of imported Chinese garment commenced earlier this month.
Every year, domestic clothing market reaches Rp 60 trillion while the exports are worth US$ 80 billion.
“Before the FTA, 40 percent of the products were imported from China. Now, their number can be up to more than 50 percent,” she said.
The members of APGAI are 60 small and medium-sized garment factories, which absorb 300 thousand labors. Thousands of factories have also joined the association.
“We used to have 300 thousand workers. But, due to the unsupportive business climate and labor law as well as sales decline, now we only have half of them,” Darsono said.
