VIVAnews - Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro shared his view on the voting right of military members in the coming general elections. He assumes the widely-discussed topic is merely the agenda of a certain party and is impossible to be implemented because it will be against the law.
“Law no 34/2004 clearly states military members must be neutral. They are not allowed to side with any political parties,” Yusgiantoro said, answering a question addressed by a student at a public lecture at Universitas Syiah Kuala (Unsyiah) Banda Aceh, as published on the Ministry of Defense website on July 4.
According to him, there are three public components whose take on the issue should be weighed on. Those components include the people and the military members.
“If the members are asked right now, I don’t think they’re ready. Several analyses are required,” he said.
The last component would be people's representatives, who are the president and the members of the House. “The views of these three components are crucial”.
Yusgiantoro also admits of having not received any official statement from the military officials on their desire to be given a right to vote. “As their minister, I haven’t heard any of it”.
He went on by saying that the military will not take sides with any political parties in the upcoming elections. He points out that the military is still focusing on improving their professionalism and constantly conducting internal reform as well as performing their duty of defending the country.
